Snow and Ice Removal in Boulder Neighborhoods – Prevent a Ticket

Man shoveling snow Image courtesy of freedigitalphotos.net/debspoonsWinter has been in full force, making it season for snow removal violations. We wanted to give you the heads up as there have been snow removal warnings sent out to some of our tenants, and just wanted to take a minute to remind everyone of Boulder’s laws regarding sidewalk snow removal.

The information provided by the city is as follows:

Sidewalk Snow and Ice Removal

All agents, owners or residents of private property must have the snow and ice on their sidewalks cleared within 24 hours after it stops snowing. Property owners and their agents are responsible for sidewalk snow removal for multi-family, commercial and industrial properties. Shoveling sidewalks helps prevent accidents and increases accessibility for pedestrians.

It is against city code for any person other than City of Boulder snow crews to deposit snow into streets, sidewalks or alleys. All snow removed from sidewalks must be kept on the property.

Code Enforcement

Boulder’s Code Enforcement officers can issue a summons to persons failing to comply with the snow removal ordinance. The fine for a first offense is $100. The maximum fine is $1,000 and 90 days in jail. Violations can result in a municipal summons issued to the responsible party and/or an abatement, which includes calling in a private snow removal contractor to clear the sidewalks. The property owner will be charged a $50 administrative fee, along with the cost to remove the snow. Properties that receive an abatement warning have 24 hours from the time and date written on the top of the warning to remove the snow themselves.

**Please also keep in mind that if you live on a corner lot, you are responsible for the sidewalk on both cross streets.

If you are planning on going out of town and are unable to shovel, please make other arrangements with friends, family, or 8z Rentals so that these tickets wont accrue while you are out of town.

We know that this can be a pain to keep up with, but just wanted to let everyone know that the Snow Removal Police are out in full force and are definitely writing tickets.
